Jennifer N. Smith 2020:

How to Control your Emotions: Effective Ways to Maintain Your Cool

When The Situation Demands It (Improve Yourself Everyday Book 1)

 a summary and critique:

. be aware of your emotion triggers

and plan ways to avoid the triggers;

eg, Smith deals with ranting people

by tuning out what they are saying,

and saying random agreeable things.

. I use trigger avoidance a lot:

one reason some challenging self-employment is so healthy

is that it keeps you focused on something positive,

something you have full control over.

. wake up out of automatic mode:

when you feel an emotion coming on,

remind yourself that expressing it is an option,

and then use some distraction technique

to stop dwelling on the trigger

long enough to talk yourself into a calm.

. negative thoughts often trigger emotions:

wake up and challenge your thoughts.

. instead of just suppressing the emotion,

start thinking about how you are going to describe it

when you do your therapeutic journaling.

. I often take notes throughout the day,

and then do all my journaling during my free time.

. one aspect about journaling that Smith doesn't mention

is that you are not doing that alone

if you have a belief in an active god.

. another great technique Smith mentions

is slow or measured breathing,

but she doesn't mention the reason it works:

it is using willful control of an automatic function

which then gives you more control over your automatic brain

where your emotion maker lives.

Smith mentions meditation for anxiety control,

but Dr.Dispenza says it is the key to

all emotion control.

["Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself:

How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One"]

. Dispenza's book explains how meditation can

get you more in touch with the god

that has a deep control over your emotions,

your health, and answered prayers.

. in the section on Jealousy, Smith suggests

surrounding yourself with grateful people

who will be a good influence on you;

but, if you have a problem with emotion control

I'm wondering how easy it will be to attract people

who have a greater emotional intelligence.

. I was grateful for the chapter on confusion;

I hadn't thought about that being an emotion,

but it is an important part of mind control.
