Hydrolyzed Collagen/Dr.Rhonda Patrick:
Dr.Patrick, in her video:
. use a quarter cup of Hydrolyzed Collagen
(in a smoothie that may be divided into several meals);
2 rounded Tbsp contains 12g; cup/4 contains 4 tbsp;
so she is using up to 24g of Collagen
(2.64g of glutamic acid).
. during times of low glucose,
proline is released from connective tissue
for alpha-ketoglutarate for mitochondria
to create ATP for energy.
--. this gave me an idea that using collagen
may help preserve bone and teeth.
. I have 2 concerns, excitotoxicity,
and sourcing from beef rather than fish.
. based on Dr.Patrick's review I'll be trying this
but I'll take it in many small doses
and be sourcing it from fish.
. there is no concern about excitotoxic
levels of glutamate?
Hydrolyzed_collagen is 11% Glutamic acid
see American Nutr Assoc:
Russell L. Blaylock, MD, author of Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills,
explains that certain amino acids
when overly abundant in the brain can cause neurons to die.
In particular, glutamate, aspartate, and cysteine
are three amino acids that excite our neurons
and can be called "excitotoxins."
Pregnant mothers are seldom warned about
dangers to the fetus from excitotoxins.
Due to the pioneering work of John Olney, MD,
pure MSG has been removed from baby food.
Glutamate, amphetamines, and other excitotoxins
may produce Parkinsonism by overexciting the cortical glutamate cells
that connect to the nigrostriatal neurons lying deep in the brain.
Dr. Blaylock is concerned about many situations
that can result in low blood sugar
with the consequent reduced brain energy level
and an inability to detoxify excitotoxins.

In her review of Dr. Blaylock's book
NOHA Honorary Member Beatrice Trum Hunter concludes:
As noted by Richard C. Henneberry, PhD,
"I consider it ironic that the pharmaceutical industry
is investing vast resources in the development of
glutamate receptor blockers
to protect [the central nervous system] neurons
against glutamate neurotoxicity in common neurological disorders,
while at the same time, the food industry,
with the blessing of the FDA, continues to
add great quantities of glutamate to the food supply."
. NOHA Board Member Adrienne Samuels, PhD, has carefully studied
the research on "glutamic acid
(found in all hydrolyzed protein products),
. . . There are . . . double-blind studies suggesting that
these amino acids are safe.
A review of studies relevant to the safety and toxicity of
glutamic acid, however, suggest that
many of them are flawed." For example,
"in the case of MSG toxicology studies,
the placebo used to test the excitotoxin glutamate
is NutraSweet®, which contains the excitotoxin aspartate.
It has been clearly shown in a multitude of studies
that aspartate produces the identical destructive reactions
on the nervous system as MSG.
It would seem obvious even to the layman that
you would not use a control substance
to compare to a known toxin
if the control contained the same class of chemical toxin.
But that is exactly what is being done."
. Dr.Patrick is using Great Lakes
gelatin Collagen Hydrolysate.
that is beef, were you aware of problems with that?
. beef is from cows which are mammals.
. eaters of mammalian meat seem more prone to cancer [pnas 2014]
than eaters of other types of animal protein;
a sugar called Neu5Gc, is found in most mammals
but not in humans; and,
humans often have high levels of Neu5Gc-specific antibodies
(perhaps developing inflammation when they eat it)
[Nat Biotechnol. 2010];
scientists wondered if humans are troubled by
eating a foreign sugar such as Neu5Gc
so they engineered mice to not make that sugar
in order to have them better model human reactions;
and, when the new mice were then fed the Neu5Gc,
they were more prone to spontaneous cancers. [ucsd.edu]
. but there are marine sources of Collagen Hydrolysate:
here is what I'm trying next from amazon:
