6.1: news.pol/healthcare/emp/usa shows concern about EMP threat:
6.2: summary:
. usa`congress is just now looking into
hardening the grid against EMP events;
they may not be done in time,
so be sure that your 3-month water supply
is not relying on electric well pumps
as many city water sources are .
Thursday preceding May 8:
House Homeland Security Committee's
Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection,
and Security Technologies's
hearing on Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP):
Threat to Critical Infrastructure .
.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R., Texas):
"Some would say it’s low probability,
but the damage that could be caused
in the event of an EMP attack,
both by the sun, a solar event, or a man-made attack,
would be catastrophic ...
We talk a lot about a nuclear bomb in Manhattan,
and cybersecurity threat to the
power grid in the Northeast,
and all of these things would actually
probably pale in comparison to the devastation
that an EMP attack could perpetrate on Americans."
.
Dr. Peter Pry,
a member of the Congressional EMP Commission
and executive director of the Task Force on
National and Homeland Security:
"an EMP event could wipe out 90 % of [usa] population
...  through starvation, disease, and societal collapse"
[because,
the power outage could last months not days .]
.
Rep. Trent Franks (R., Ariz.), has introduced H.R. 3410,
the Critical Infrastructure Protection Act,
which would enable the Department of Homeland Security
to protect the electric grid.
