Fusion sharing external Linux drive #Mac #Vmware

9.22: cyb/mac/formats sharable with linux
9.30: intro:
. I have 2 machines: mac and linux,
and I want an external drive they can both use:
however last time I checked,
fusion couldn't allow a linux vm to
directly access a mac's external drive .
. if that is true, then I need some
mac drivers that access linux`ext{2,3,4} .
9.22: summary:
. it looks like the openware community
isn't really interested in ntfs support;
fat32 is sufficient if you minimize exposure:
having it mounted only for loading bak's,
and using that card only for a bak .
. I should use version control systems
to notice when corruptions have happened .
. the commercial offering is:
$40 paragon`ExtFS for Mac OS X
Mount any Ext2, Ext3, Ext4[!!] drives
like it's part of the native Mac file system.

(if you have problems
they expect you to call support;
their support is not manning their forum).

here were Fusion capabilities
last time I checked:

. I wrote the following collection of quotes
to illustrate inconsistencies among the various
reports of what mac.vmware`fusion could do .
if you want to access ext3 for linux:
[paraphrased] Nov 16, 2008 9:20 PM
communities.vmware.com/
. you cannot use Fusion's VMDKMounter
to mount
an ext3/LVM .vmdk virtual disk;
and, any other solution -- if it exists --
has nothing to do with Fusion.
So in the context of using Fusion's VMDKMounter
to mount an ext3/LVM virtual disk
it is not doable, as it is with a Windows NTFS or
FAT32 formated .vmdk virtual hard disk .
. In theory all you have to do is
find a MacFUSE filesystem plugin that handles ext3.
There's an experimental one,
but I don't think it's stable .

if you had vmware workstation for pc ...
communities.vmware.com/
. add USB controller to the VM
and plug in the external drive
after the VM starts to boot;
or, add it as a physical disk to the VM
(thats the advanced option
in the add disk wizard) .

Fuse-ext2 2010.06/readme.rtf/Bugs
sourceforge.net
Fuse-ext2 is a EXT2 Filesystem support for FUSE.
. there are no known bugs for read-only mode.
although, write support is available (and it is pretty stable)
please do not mount your filesystems with write support
unless you do not have anything to lose.

9.22: web:
news on fusion reads linux`ext3:
  ext3 external drive in Ubuntu vm on Windows XP
yes - two ways to skin the cat:
- add USB controller to the VM
and plug in the external drive after the VM starts to boot
- add it as a physical disk to the VM
(thats the advanced option in the add disk wizard)
[9.30: my reply:
does this apply to Fusion too?
(I suspect for the price, it's limited in this area too) ]

mac drivers that access linux`ext{2,3,4}:
confirming that fuse-ext2 does indeed work for
native reading/writing of ext2/3 partitions on SL 10.6.2.
but fuse-ext2-0.0.7 doesn't work solidly (2011-08-15):
"( altough, write support is available
(and it is pretty stable)
please do not mount your filesystems with write support
unless you do not have anything to loose. )
Usage:    fuse-ext2 device|image_file mount_point [-o option[,...]]
Options:  ro, force, allow_others
          Please see details in the manual.
Example:  fuse-ext2 /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1
. the manuals? maybe from terminal after installing?
openware`ext4 for max os x (readonly)
"( able to mount my ubuntu 10.04 partition.
The main reason this exists is to be able to read it from OSX.
Of course, this is only readonly, and it should be safe to use.
In the worst case scenario you won't be able to mount anything
(although I believe that should work).
I currently have ...
a MACOSX VM copying from ext4
shared on the downstairs PC to USB HFS+ )
. I need a shared journaled fs;
but linux`ext4 is not well supported by openware;
what are they doing with ntfs?

news on fusion reading ntfs:
linux can read and write NTFS formatted partitions
-- launch this in your browser window: apt:ntfs-config
the home page of ntfs-3g
The present limitations of this driver are:
    writing files encrypted or compressed at the filesystem level
    (does not include .zip, .gz, .rar files since they are
    compressed on the file, not the file system level)
    changing NTFS file ownership and access rights
see manual:
-- keep in mind tho'
their manual is an abject afterthought:
not just incomplete but wrong .
